Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU)

Imagine a semester where your mornings start with a British-style seminar in English and your evenings end with hand-pulled noodles in a 2,500-year-old canal town. That is a semester abroad at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) in Suzhou, China's largest international joint-venture university, founded in 2006 by Xi'an Jiaotong University and the University of Liverpool. All teaching is in English and follows the UK, research-led model, so the classroom feels familiar while everything around it is new. As a bachelor's or master's semester student you join regular modules alongside degree students from more than 90 countries, choosing from business, computer science, engineering, architecture, media, humanities and the natural sciences. Free Chinese language classes for international students are a great way to start ordering street food in Mandarin within weeks. Suzhou is often called the Venice of the East. Wander the UNESCO-listed classical gardens, cycle along Jinji Lake, drink tea in Pingjiang Road's old alleys, and celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival with mooncakes or Spring Festival with lanterns. Shanghai is about 25 minutes away by high-speed train, and Hangzhou, Nanjing and Beijing are easy weekend trips on one of the world's best rail networks. Daily life is affordable, with typical living costs of RMB 2,400 to 4,600 a month, modern apartments near campus and 240+ student clubs. A full semester load is around 30 ECTS. Credit transfer always needs written prior approval between you and your home university, so agree your course list before you leave. uniclub helps you for free with choosing modules, your application and visa guidance, so you can focus on the adventure.
