Temple University, Japan Campus (TUJ) is the oldest and largest American university in Japan and part of Temple University in the United States. With a newly opened campus in Kyoto you can spend your exchange semester at an American university — fully taught in English — in the cultural heart of Japan. TUJ combines a US academic tradition with life in one of Japan's most beautiful and historic cities, a strong fit for European exchange students. **Studying at TUJ Kyoto** Classes take place on TUJ's Kyoto campus — Japan's cultural capital, famous for its temples, preserved traditional neighbourhoods and timeless atmosphere. Courses are available at bachelor and master level and are all taught in English. You can choose from a broad range of fields — International Business, Communication Studies, Psychology, Asian Studies, International Affairs, Computer Science — so it is easy to find courses that match your home study plan. **Workload & ECTS** Full-time enrolment is a minimum of 12 US credits per semester, typically up to 18. TUJ uses the American credit system: most courses are 3 credits, which usually map to around 6 ECTS. Whether you need 12 or 15 credits to reach 30 ECTS depends on your home university. You finish the semester with an official Transcript of Records that can be validated for ECTS at home. **Living in Kyoto** Kyoto is the cultural heart of Japan. With more than a thousand temples and shrines, preserved districts like Gion, imperial palaces and serene Japanese gardens, history is part of everyday life. You can experience tea ceremonies, cherry blossoms in spring, vivid autumn foliage and a calm, authentic side of Japan. Osaka and Nara are next door, and the Shinkansen puts Tokyo only a couple of hours away. **University profile** Established: 1982 (TUJ). The parent Temple University in the US was founded in 1884. Accreditation: Middle States Commission on Higher Education (USA) and MEXT (Japan). Temple University ranks in the top 500 of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026. Student body: a large international community with students from more than 60 countries. Popular programmes: International Business, Communication Studies, International Affairs, Psychology and Asian Studies — all taught in English. **Housing** One of TUJ's biggest advantages is that the university provides student housing. TUJ handles the complicated parts for you — key money, deposit, cleaning fees, contracts, paperwork, utilities and internet. You just apply for housing and you are ready to enjoy Kyoto and the Kansai region. All residences come furnished with a private room, private bathroom, small kitchen, bedding, high-speed Wi-Fi and utilities included. The full list of residences is below. **Entry requirements** You need a minimum GPA of 4 on your current degree (Danish 7-step scale) and you must have completed your first year. You also need to document your English proficiency — e.g. TOEFL/IELTS, enrolment in a Danish degree taught entirely in English, an upper-secondary diploma in English, or a confirmation letter from your home university. **Tuition** One semester at TUJ Kyoto costs from around 880,000 JPY (~€4,800) in tuition. Danish university students receive at least 25,000 DKK in udlandsstipendium — engineering students get the full tuition covered. Students at Danish professionshøjskoler or erhvervsakademier get at least 32,000 DKK covered. **Semester dates** Spring semester: early January to mid-May.
